As a music producer and jazz geek, it is always an exciting endeavor to embark on projects that pay homage to the timeless classics while infusing them with fresh interpretations. "Swing & Soul" is precisely that—a labor of love that celebrates the genius of Duke Pearson, who is in my opinion one of the most influential composers and arrangers in the history of jazz.

Duke Pearson's contributions to the jazz canon are immeasurable. His compositions are marked by an enduring quality that transcends eras. From his years with the legendary Blue Note Records to his extensive work as a sideman and leader, Pearson left an indelible mark on the world of jazz. The rich harmonies, captivating melodies, and infectious rhythms found in his compositions serve as the swinging foundation for "Swing & Soul."

The real soul behind "Swing & Soul" are the remarkable musicians of Posi-Tone Records. Art Hirahara's piano work serves as the lynchpin, providing both the groove and the elegance inherent in Pearson's music. Diego Rivera's saxophone soars and weaves its own narrative, paying tribute to the jazz tradition while pushing the boundaries of modern interpretation. Boris Kozlov's bass and Vinnie Sperrazza's drums lay down the essential groove that underpins these timeless compositions. Also adding a distinctive layer of musicality to the album is the esteemed pianist Jon Davis joining in as a special guest on three tracks.

"Swing & Soul" is more than a simple collection of Duke Pearson's compositions. For me, it's both a heartfelt tribute and reimagining of his enduring musical legacy in the hands of the exceptional talents of Art Hirahara, Diego Rivera, Boris Kozlov, Vinnie Sperrazza, and Jon Davis.

With this latest album in the "Blue Moods" series, we are hoping to garner greater attention for this music from new listeners by celebrating both the timeless melodies and the compositional flexibility of these songs while also serving as a fitting testament to Pearson's perseverance to continuously inspire new generations of jazz aficionados.
